What’s up web folk? The last time I wrote for the lifestyle blog I was talking about a family member that has alzhiemer’s and I wanted to follow up that post with a key things that you can choose to do now that could possibly save your brain later on in your life. These are not hard and steady rules to go by but there seems to be allot of mounting evidence that these five things that I am going to share with you now can have a very positive effect on your quality of life later on.
The five parts of your life that you can choose to affect immediately are your social circles, physical activity, cognitive activity, your nutrition and setting a long term goal for your life or some would call it knowing the purpose for your life. Now I will grant you that we are all choosing what to do in all these areas of our lives already we just may not be thinking of the long term effects of how it is we are choosing to live in the moment. So be honest with yourself right now, how many things to you do in your daily lifestyle that are choosen actions because you want your brain to be sharp in the long run?
In terms of nutrition or the diet that you follow one the better one’s that we see mentioned allot is the Mediterranean diet. This probably has something to do with the fact that this diet relies heavily on things like olive oil, fish, nuts, fresh fruits, whole grains and vegetables. This is something that we as a family changed to a few years ago specifically for our heart health not knowing until later on that there was evidence that this diet may be in your best interest for keeping your brain healthy as well.
Now in terms of your cognitive skills these are things that can be quite fun to do and I really don’t see a down side to doing them. Things like puzzle games and reading are probably the most important cognitive skills that you can do as you live your life. Especially for those of us that are no longer attending school, we tend to get lazy when it comes to challenging our brain power to do new things when we leave school. I’m just saying based on my own personal experience there has not been much book learning going on up there since I started working in the real world. I like to stay sharp with an occasional word puzzle either cross word or search and I also like to do simple puzzle games like tetris.
The other things are pretty self explanatory I think like and they all kind of feed into each other in my opinion. Things like your social circle and having a purpose for you life for me means being plugged into your community. Things like volunteering either through your church or local government office can go a long way to defining your purpose in life. Perhaps being a public servant, fireman, social worker or community leader are very fulfilling and can lead to a very driven lifestyle.
Which leaves us with one last thing which is physical activity! I am not telling you that you have to go out and exercise because I think we all know what the benefits of that are even though there are still plenty of out there that are still not doing any form of it. Forget exercise though how about just getting up and doing something even something as simple as going for a walk at the local mall or walking up that extra flight of stairs instead of taking that escalator. Get up and do something for goodness sakes we are talking about plain old physical activity!
So how many of those five things do you do in one way or another with the intention of keeping your brain healthy and more importantly to try and make sure that you do not get alzheimers? Like I said I don’t know allot of people that have made lifestyle choices with the intention of keeping their brains healthy. I can assure you though that once you see what that terrible disease can do to you and your loved one’s you may start thinking more intently about keeping your brain healthy for the long term. If you want to read more about why diet and lifestyle are important factors in fighting Alzheimer’s then you need to click on that link you just passed on by there.
