What does a healthy lifestyle mean to you? Are you presently living what you would classify as a healthy lifestyle or at least striving to be? Well let’s look at what are considered to be in general the three key elements to living a healthy lifestyle. Those three elements would be your diet, the amount of exercise you get and the amount of sleep that you achieve on a normal basis. More often that not one, two or even all three of these elements are in dire need of attention as we push ourselves to levels of exhaustion and abuse against our own bodies.
Let’s start with sleep,
a basic need and obvious part of having a healthy lifestyle is getting enough sleep. Most adults now a days struggle to get enough sleep on a consistent basis as our lives that dominate us while we are awake takes priority over the sleep that our bodies need everyday. We all struggle to find a balance in our lives for the things we want to accomplish on a daily basis and the easiest thing for people to sacrafice in order squeeze more time into their day is the sleep they need to get. Does this sound like you? It sure is something I have been guilty of on many occasions.
Now the diet,
what classifies as a healthy diet could probably be debated by diet specialist until the end of time. It seems like to me anyway that if we wait long enough eventually they will come up with a study that tells you what is healthy for you today will be un-healthy for you in the future. So what do you do when it comes to eating a healthy diet. I personally like to eat small meals on a more frequent basis, kind of like how we ate when we were born. Small meals every couple of hours was good enough when we were babies why change something that seems to be a natural instinct. In terms of what to eat again that could be debated until the end of time. I think the old saying too much of anything is not good for you so I try and eat as much
variety in meals as much as possible. Keeps my diet more exciting that way as well, variety is the spice of life you know.
Now we come to every one’s favorite topic of the three and that is of course how much exercise
you get in your daily life. I look at it this way. Exercise is a need that was born out of the fact that our society became technologically advanced and we figured out how to get things done with machines. Our bodies were meant to move and be active and it’s through all the technological advances over the last 100 years that a lot of body movements and activities have been limited or all together eliminated. Just think of all the physical activities that have been replaced by machines in just the last 100 years. The most basic of activities, walking! Walking is now classified as an exercise because we have managed to eliminate the need
for it as much as possible. People use cars, trains, planes, bikes, escalators, elevators and a personal favorite of mine heelys (shoes with wheels in them! talk about lazy!) all of these things work to get you from point A to point B all but eliminating the need to walk. So get to exercising people, your body needs it and was meant to do it only it used to be working and getting around.
