Dealing With Habits Created by Lifestyle That Ruin your Health

If you find that after you have read this piece about your lifestyle habits that may be ruining your health that you have something to contribute. Please share your thoughts with a comment at the end.

Get Fit! Lose Weight! Stop Smoking! Get Healthy! How many times have you heard those words
and just felt that it was simply an impossible goal to actually achieve? Why do you feel that way? Is
it because you have tried to make those changes before and never succeeded? Is it because you
feel that trying again will only end the same way as always in a failure to reach that goal?
You aren’t alone! The great majority of people would love to achieve a fit physique, would love to
lose their excess weight or would love to quit smoking permanently. But in fact, the great majority
can’t stay with the commitment for long and are failing regularly at reaching their goal.
The fact is that 95%-96% of smokers who try to hard to quit smoking fail and resume smoking within
the first year. 80% of dieters who are try hard to lose their excess weight quit their diet
within the first 30 days. Exercisers don’t fair much better, they quit their commitments within 90 days.
Why is that the case? Why can’t people stay committed and achieve the healthy goal they want to
achieve? The reality is that all research supports that in order to achieve a healthy goal to stop
smoking, to lose weight or even to achieve total fitness commitment support is required for real
success to occur.
When you are trying to make a change to your lifestyle its not as easy as you may have believed.
You aren’t a failure or weak because you haven’t been able to stay committed it is because you are
human. As much as we all want to remain an island of personal strength without the need to rely on
anyone else to achieve a healthy goal the research doesn’t support that as a realistic idea. In fact
the research supports the fact that without commitment support from an outside source other than
just yourself you are not going to be successful in achieving your goal, period!
Our human bodies are wonderfully complex machines that even now the scientists and physicians
still guess about how much of it all works. But there is one thing that is clear, our human bodies are
creatures of habit. It hangs on to bad habits when you are trying to make a healthy change, like it’s
a life and death proposition that makes it necessary that you fail, even though the change you are
trying to make is to improve health.
If you have trained your brain to want nicotine you have to convince it that it doesn’t want nicotine
by resisting lighting up another cigarette for at least a year. Throughout that year it will be working
hard and consistently to convince you that you need to smoke. Who’s going to help you through
those times when your own brain is telling you to do what you shouldn’t?
If you have trained your brain to eat food in excess you will have to convince it that it doesn’t need
that excess food for months to a year or longer. Throughout that entire period it will be working
hard to consistently convince you that you need to over eat. Who’s going to help you through those
times when your own brain is telling you to do what you shouldn’t?
The same is true for those who want to achieve exercise fitness. Exercise fitness takes time to
achieve for some months for others a year or longer of consistent effort. If you quit an exercise
regiment your body will begin the process of returning you back to unfit reversing everything you
achieved. But your brain has become used to not exercising regularly and isn’t very interested in
changing that pattern. Thus, time and time again your own brain, will be consistently trying to
convince you that you really don’t need to exercise. Who’s going to help you through those times
when your own brain is telling you to not do what you should?
So what do you do about this? Do you line up your friends and tell them all that you will need them
consistently to help you stay committed to your healthy goal? And will they be able to say the right
thing to help you stay committed when you go to them? What if they say the wrong thing? Will that
cause you to give up right then and there?
How about professional help? You can get professional help through various channels including
traditional mental health counselors for smoking cessation and weight loss. Also, you can get
smoking cessation commitment support through state run hotlines available in many states across
the US and for weight loss commitment support you can join programs such as Jenny Craig or
Weight Watchers.
If you are seeking to achieve exercise fitness you only have two avenues and that is with a personal
trainer or joining with other exercisers who you hope will stay committed when you are losing that
commitment. If it happens at the same time you will end up having a person helping to convince you
to quit instead of go forward.
There are books and text message commitment support products but when you are having a
commitment challenge while you are trying to quit smoking, trying to lose weight, or trying to
achieve total fitness, you won’t want to read a book during those moments and the research
logically supports that auditory support is much more effective.

commitment support that is required to succeed. Using your cell phone, iPOD, MP3 player, CD
